The 2021 Adobe eLearning World is a three-day series of sessions that are available to everyone who registers. I will be conducting a session on Mobile Responsive eLearning Workshop – Create Courses That Work Across Devices.

My session is as follows…

Every day more people want to use their mobile devices for work, education, and entertainment. The demand for eLearning to be available on mobile devices continues to increase. Having the knowledge and skills to design and develop eLearning that works on a wide range of devices and screen sizes is becoming an essential skill for developers. In the future, eLearning design and development jobs will go to those who have these skills. In the competitive job market, you need these skills. In this workshop, users will learn:

  • the correct way to decide on your layouts so that your content arranges itself correctly on different-sized devices.

  • how to design and develop Fluid Box master slides to have Captivate do most of the work for you.

  • to select the correct number of fluid boxes and what settings need to be applied to each fluid box to get the results you want.

  • to have optional content, such as purely aesthetic elements, drop off when there is not enough room for them on smaller devices.

Here is the link to download the project file if you wish to follow along with the session: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y4NXl2SsEsIsTyb3_AGO5QTwwOueaIBB/view?usp=sharing

Convert Your PNG to SVG Images

Sometimes even the best PNG images don't look so great in your Adobe Captivate eLearning projects. Here's a procedure for converting your high-quality PNG files to SVG images.

Sometimes even the best PNG images don't look so great in your Adobe Captivate eLearning projects. Here's a procedure for converting your high-quality PNG files to SVG images. The advantage of SVGs is that they are relatively small in file size but they are also vector graphics. What that means is that SVGs look great at any size and they are completely compatible with Adobe Captivate.

Troubleshoot Fluid Box Design in Adobe Captivate | Aug 19, 12:00 PM EDT | 16:00 UTC

Recently I had to take an older Adobe Captivate 9 non-responsive project and convert it to a fluid box responsive design project using Adobe Captivate 2019. I really learned some valuable lessons during that process, and I want to share those with all of you. I'm happy to say that the results were excellent. Rather than using my own design, I used the new Ready-to-go Projects and Slides from Adobe. It didn't take me long to do this work. In this live stream, I will be sharing my process for getting fluid box responsive design to work across as many different device sizes as possible. Make sure you join live if you have questions you wish to ask me about this often misunderstood process.

If you are interested in learning more about that process of using the Ready-to-go projects and slides, I'm giving a presentation at the Adobe Learning Summit in Las Vegas on October 3, 2019. It's a free conference, but you must register to attend. Check it out: https://learningsummit.elearning.adobeevents.com/

Adobe Captivate Fluid Box Secrets | July 22th 12:00 PM EDT | 16:00 UTC

Experienced eLearning designers will tell you that responsive design only represents 5% or less of the eLearning designed today, and because of that, you shouldn’t necessarily embrace it. I predict that this is going to shift the other way within the next five years. If you don’t have this skill, you may no longer be competitive within this industry. You need to master these skills I will be sharing with you in this livestream.

Fluid Boxes on Your Adobe Captivate Master Slides

In this tutorial, I show you how you can create fluid boxes on your Adobe Captivate master slides so that the fluid boxes are inherited by your regular filmstrip slides.

In this tutorial, I show you how you can create fluid boxes on your Adobe Captivate master slides so that the fluid boxes are inherited by your regular filmstrip slides. I will also show you how you can add child level fluid boxes on the regular slides but still maintain the layouts from the master slides as well. There are some things to be aware of when you create fluid boxes on your master slides so watch the video for the full details.

Fix Fluid Box Image Fill Resize Issue in Captivate

In this Adobe Captivate tutorial, I show you how to fix the fluid box image fill resize issue.

During my live stream from a few days earlier than this post, I noticed something that I hadn’t paid attention to when importing images into the background fill of my fluid boxes. It seems that Captivate was resizing the images during the import process. Obviously, this isn’t what I wanted since I’m the type of person who prepares his images in advanced of developing my elearning and I pick specific sizes based on the eLearning canvas size. In this Adobe Captivate tutorial, I show you how to fix the fluid box image fill resize issue.

Prevent Responsive Text Pop-Outs from Appearing

The button you are seeing at the bottom of your text container (smart shape or text caption) is actually by design in Adobe Captivate (2017 Release). It appears when a text container has more text than can be accommodated by your minimum font size and the size of the text container...

Some Adobe Captivate 2017 users are reporting seeing the following icon/button on their published responsive design eLearning projects.

Pop out button from Adobe Captivate 2017

Pop out button from Adobe Captivate 2017

The button you are seeing at the bottom of your text container (smart shape or text caption) is actually by design in Adobe Captivate (2017 Release). It appears when a text container has more text than can be accommodated by your minimum font size and the size of the text container. For example, when displaying large paragraphs of text on a smaller display. Tapping the button will display a dark overlay with all the text in white, and if necessary, with a scrollbar when the amount of text is too much for the screen.  Once your learner finishes reading all the text, tapping the screen will return them to the full slide. Sometimes it seems as if the button is appearing for no reason. There are a few possibilities as to why this happens.

  1. Your text container is right on the threshold of when the button will be determined to be necessary. In these cases, slightly increasing the size of the text container may solve your problem. Alternatively, you could also select a smaller minimum font size on your fluid box properties.
  2. Another item to consider is the margins set for your text container. Decreasing the margins will allow more space for your text and perhaps just enough to accommodate the text on smaller device screens.
  3. Lastly, consider where the text has been. If you copied and pasted this text from a word processor, it may contain unnecessary formatting codes, invisible characters, or extra line breaks that could be causing the pop out text button to appear.

Here is a video from my YouTube channel that shows you how you can get rid of the extra hidden characters that might be forcing your project to show these buttons when they are not actually needed.
